| Thursday,
September 16, 2004 Source? apologies if any copyright is infringed. The Danvers Archival Center is the recent recipient of a 20th century painting of a Danversite important to the recent history of the town. A framed, oil-on-canvas painting of* Walter T. Creese, painted by famed portrait artist and muralist Richard V. Ellery, was donated to the Town Archival Center by Mr. Robert Lash. Walter T. Creese was born in England in 1869 and in 1901 co-founded with Henry W. Cook the Creese & Cook Leather Company, which existed until 1982 on Water St. Mr. Creese served as treasurer of the company, retiring in 1954. His life in Danvers was marked with numerous civil and governmental service, including activities with various Masonic Lodges, including Master of Amity Lodge, and serving as a Trustee of the Hunt Memorial Hospital from 1928-1951. Mr. Creese was elected to the Danvers Board of Selectmen and served as an elected Town Meeting member beginning in 1932. He also served on the Electric Light Commission. His family included sons Guy T. and Bertram Creese, also active in local affairs. Walter Creese saw service in the Massachusetts General Court, being elected a state representative from 1920-1922, and serving as a state senator from 1923-1924. He died in 1956. The Ellery painting, portraying a grandfatherly Walter Creese sitting in a chair and holding a pipe, was donated by Mr. Creese's grandson, Robert Lash. Mr. Lash had contacted state representative Gale D. Candaras of Wilbraham, asking for assistance in finding an appropriate home for the portrait. Rep. Candaras's office contacted Danvers State Rep. Ted Speliotis, who informed them of the Danvers Archival Center, a town department which collects and preserves all manner of documentary materials relating to the history of Danvers. Arrangements were made for the gift transfer, which was made through Rep. Candaras's Legislative Director Laurie K. Byrne. The portrait is presently on display in the Danvers Archival Center's public reading room at the Peabody Institute Library, 15 Sylvan St. |
