Thomas Merris and Hester Shergold (nee Fox) of Salisbury, Wiltshire
THOMAS
MERRIS SHERGOLD, baptised August 18th 1782 at Salt Lane Presbyterian, Salisbury,
Wiltshire.; died 1840 Salisbury, Wiltshire He was the son of THOMAS
SHERGOLD
and ELIZABETH
SHERGOLD (nee MERRIS).
He married HESTER SHERGOLD (nee FOX) at St Mary's, Taunton, Somerset
on 26th August 1805 (why Taunton?) Hester died in 1852 at Salisbury, Wiltshire.
In the Mormon's IGI there is a record for a baptism of Thomas Merris Shergold
who was born at Brown St? Salisbury, Wiltshire? 21st October 1780 and who was
Christened 7th June 1820 at St Martin's, Salisbury, Wiltshire. It seems he was
Christened twice.
His father Thomas Shergold died abt 1814 around the same time that Thomas himself
ended up in debtors prison. Although by about 1831 he was described as a gentleman.

In 1823 Thomas Merris Shergold gave his
occupation as a Writer and the family were living at Brown Street, Salisbury,
Wiltshire.In 1831 he is described as a gentleman. He is related to Stephen Mills
of Elstone through his mother's family the MERRIS
family of Salisbury and the Isle of Wight, Hampshire..

Stephen
Mills, of Elston, near Shrewton, also farmed on a large scale and owned
almost 5,000 acres. On his death in 1858, 4,180 prize Southdown breeding
sheep were auctioned at one of the biggest sheep auctions ever to have
been held in the south of England. (fn. 300) Sacred to the memory of Stephen Mills esq of Elston House in this parish who departed this life to be with Christ on 21st December 1857 aged 61 years. If
we believe that Jesus died and rose again, then so also them which sleep
in Jesus will God bring with him ----------- Then
are they glad becasue they are at rest and so he bringeth them unto the

married at Taunton, Somerset in 1805. Why at Taunton?
H/ESTHER FOX, born Abt. 1784 in Salisbury, Wiltshire; died in Brown Street, Salisbury ? after 1851. In 1851 she was a Nurse died abt 1852, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Don't know who her parents were. Did she have a connection with Taunton, Somerset?
