...................... ..Death
of Mr Samuel Luke .Wellington
Evening Post – Mon 5.3. 1900
The unexpected death on Saturday afternoon of Mr Samuel Luke, of the firm of
S. Luke and Co, iron founders,
removes a figure formerly very familiar in one of the industrial enterprises
of Wellington, and a man respected by
a wide circle of acquaintances.
Mr Luke has been out of active business life for some years, though up to the
time of his death he was senior partner
and one of the directors of the firm which bears his name.
For the last year he has been living with his married daughter, Mrs Little,
of Christchurch, but came up on a holiday trip
about six weeks ago, and had been staying at the home of his son Mr J P Luke.
He was accustomed to have general good health, though aware of a weakness of
the heart. On Saturday he attended
a picnic at Kilbirnie in connection with the Primitive Methodist School at Newtown,
and at the close of the day he started
to walk home in the company of his son Mr C M Luke and several of his grand-children.
While walking at a leisurely pace up the hill road he gasped for breath, fell
forward into his son’s arms, and expired.
Dr. Anson, who had been attending Mr Luke for his complaint has certified that
death was due to failure of the
heart’s action.
The deceased gentleman, as before stated, had lived a retired life for many
years, but his death will be regretted by many relatives and friends.
He leaves three sons Messrs Chas. M., John P., and George Luke – who all reside
in Wellington, and one daughter living in Christchurch.
Mr J.P. Luke, who heard the sad news at Lyttelton, returned yesterday. The funeral
took place this afternoon, the body
being interred in the Sydney-street cemetery in the presence of a large attendance
of mourners, the ceremony being
conducted by the Rev. Mr Dawson.
