Clifton Chronicle and Directory Wednesday May 11 1881

A sad accident, which proved fatal happened on Thursday morning to a man named Robert Gibbons 35 years of age who, had resided at Fraser Street Windmill Hill Bedminster. Deceased who was in the employ of the Bristol Tramways Co as a Chaff Cutter while engaged in oiling one of the machines accidentally got entangled in the machinery. He was at once conveyed from Colston Street where the accident occurred to the infirmary and it was there found that one of his legs and his thigh were broken and his head severely injured. He was admitted about 12 in the morning, and died at 5.30 the same evening. Deceased leaves a wife and five children totally unprovided for. At the inquest held on Saturday afternoon before the deputy coroner, Mr. E.M. Harwood. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

BRISTOL MERCURY & DAILY POST Saturday May 14th 1881
Fatal Accident

An inquest was held by Mr. Harwood on Saturday at the infirmary touching the death of Robert Gibbons aged 33 years, an engine driver in the employ of Bristol Tramway & Co and who lately lived in Fraser Street, Windmill Hill, Bedminster. The deputy coroner having shortly detailed the facts which had come to his knowledge, the following evidence was taken.
John Bryant deposed that on Thursday, with the deceased he went to oil the machinery which was connected with the chaff cutters at the tramway company's forage works, Host Street.
The deceased finding that the brackets were warm went to oil them, but getting too near the revolving shaft it had caught his coat and he was whirled round. The machinery could have been stopped if the deceased had seen to it. Witness seeing what had happened ran and stopped the engine, and when that was done the deceased fell.

The shaft made about 60 revolutions per minute and it was nearly a minute and a quarter before the driving engine was stopped. When rescued the deceased was found to be shockingly injured and witness got a cab into which he was placed and driven to the infirmary, where he died the same evening. He was insensible when placed in the cab, but shortly recovering said he believed he could stand on one leg. The deputy coroner here asked Major Faussett (Inspector of Factories) who was present if he had any question to put to the witness, but Mr.Faussett said he did not think that the place where the accident had happened came within the meaning of the Factory Act, so he had not visited it officially. R.W. Adler engineer of ? Street gave a description of the machinery which his firm had erected. Deceased was a steady man and had been in the employ of the Tramway Co for four years ......................... The re-errection of the machinery to do whatever was necessary, and these instructions were carried. The Deputy Coroner was of opinion from the evidence that the deceased came by his death purely through an accident. The jury concurring; a verdict was returned accordingly. Mr. Doggett (Stanley, Wasborough & Doggett) watched the enquiry for the Tramway Company, and Mr. J.C. Robinson was also present.
