Mark Watts, Poet and Miner of Phillack, Cornwall was born abt 1799 and died abt 1876 son of ancestor MARK WATTS 1760-1833 by his second wife Jane Watts (nee Wearne) 1762-1821. A few extracts of his poetry can be found further down this page.

Mark was a half brother of my gt, gt, gt, grandmother MARY WATTS d 1851 of Phillack, Cornwall (who was his elder half sister by his father's first wife Mary Hosking of Phillack). She married FRANCIS HOCKING UREN in 1811 at Phillack, Cornwall.

Mark Watts married an Elizabeth Hosking of Phillack daughter of a Francis Hosking? (presumably a relation of his father's first wife and my ancestress) 8th October 1825, Phillack, Cornwall. Mark's son John Watts married Grace Hosking 18th May 1850 at Phillack, Cornwall. She was also the daughter of a Francis Hosking of Phillack.

The first poem lists 17 famous mines, with some inventive rhymes: 'Tincroft, Basset, and Roskear/Hundreds
are still employed there/East Pool South Crofty, both Wheal Setons/Are daily fill'd with boys and maidens.'

Single sheet size 15" x 10", laid on conservation tissue, small tear in left hand margin. 36 verses, in 3 columns, with three crude woodcuts at head, 2 of dolmens and one of men at engine house, etc. J.O. Tells the history of the mines 'Thousands of tons I'm bold to say\Were brought by mules down to Hayle quay.... William and Robert Kneebone too\For years had got this work to do....'
