Avery and Mary Halls (nee Hill) of Great Torrington, Devon

JOHN
AVERY HALLS (great, great, great grandfather) born
Tawstock, Devon? abt 1796; died July 26th 1843, Great Torrington, Devon.
Son of UNKNON
HALLS (Probably JOHN HALLS a Yeoman of Tawstock, Devon and JOANNA
HALLS (nee AVERY). He married or cohabited with MARY HALLS
(nee HILL) .
MARY HALLS (nee HILL) daughter of UNKNOWN HILL and UNKNOWN HILL (nee UNKNOWN)
After the death of John Avery Halls his widow/partner gt, gt grandmother MARY HALLS (nee HILL) married JAMES COX DILLING and died herself in 1846 aged 34 years. There is a marriage in 1844 July/Aug/Sept Quarter at Exeter for a Mary Ann Hill and a James Dilling. Could it be that actually ancestors John Avery Halls and Mary Ann Hill were not actually married? particularly as in the 1851 census her children are given the name Hill when they are living in their paternal aunt Charlotte's household in Barnstaple.
There is a James Cox Dilling born in September quarter 1846 at Torrington. It appears that Mary may have died in childbirth? Did this James Dilling die abt 1850 in Plymouth?

The grave in Great Torrington churchyard, Devon of ancestor John Avery Halls
|
The inscription reads. John Avery Halls died 26/7/1843 aged 50 years. Also Mary Ann Halls daughter 16/ 9/ 1845 aged 6 years, also Mary Ann Dilling wife of James Cox Dilling 31/10/1846 aged 34 years. |
Slight confusion because in 1866 on Frederic's marriage certificate John Avery Halls is shown as alive and a carpenter!
