JOHN AVERY HALLS (great, great, great grandfather) born Tawstock, Devon abt 1796;
Died July 26th 1843, Great Torrington, Devon. Son of JOHN HALLS a Yeoman of Tawstock,
Devon and JOANNA HALLS (nee AVERY). John co habited with my ancestress MARY ANN HILL.

MARY ANN HILL was the daughter of WILLIAM HILL and MARTHA or ELIZABETH HILL
(nee UNKNOWN) of Barnstaple, Devon.

After the death of John Avery Halls his widow/partner gt, gt grandmother MARY ANN HILL
married JAMES COX DILLING at St David's, Exeter September 10th 1844. The marriage certificate is
curious as Mary Ann gives her status as a Widow and occupation as a Pawnbroker but has the same
surname as her father WILLIAM HILL (a Sawyer of Salem Street, Barnstaple in 1841) There is
a James Cox Dilling born in September quarter 1846 at Torrington. Mary Ann died 31/10/1846 aged
34 years at Great Torrington. It appears that Mary may have died in childbirth? Did her son James Dilling
die about 1850 in Plymouth, Devon?

1842 The will of John Avery Halls 4th August 1842 the original was
(destroyed in the Blitz during the Second World War).

The grave in Great Torrington churchyard, Devon of ancestor John Avery Halls

The inscription reads. John Avery Halls died 26/7/1843 aged 50 years. Also Mary Ann Halls daughter 16/ 9/ 1845 aged 6 years, also Mary Ann Dilling wife of James Cox Dilling 31/10/1846 aged 34 years.

Slight confusion because in 1866 on Frederic's marriage certificate John Avery Halls is shown as alive and a carpenter!

(3) FREDERIC HALLS born abt 1842 in Great Torrington, Devon; died in Catherine St ? St Phillip and
St Jacob, Bristol; married as his first wife HARRIET SHERGOLD March 7, 1866 in Temple Parish Church, Bristol. They were my gt, gt grandparents.

(4) Edwin Halls living 1841 with parents at Great Torrington, Devon aged 9. I assume he died between 1841 and 1851.
No sign of him.
