JOHN
FARRANT baptised 17th October 1802 at Colaton Raleigh, Devon; died
possibly Honiton, Devon
1857? and before 1861. He was the son of JAMES
FARRANT
and JANE
FARRANT (nee TUCK). John was the
grandson of JOHN
FARRANT and MARY
FARRANT
(nee PINE) of Colaton Raleigh, Devon. His grandfather
John died when John (junior) was aged about five years. John married
LYDIA REED 24th March 1829 at Venn Ottery,
Devon. Daughter
of UNKNOWN REED and UNKNOWN REED (nee UNKNOWN)
some time of Upottery, Devon.
I cannot find a baptism for Lydia Reed anywhere so have no idea who
her parents are. Is she from the Reed family that has
lived in Upottery for many years? About
30 years ago I visited Upottery and passed a very old man who looked
a bit like a
Taylor. I wish I had asked him about the Reeds because most likely he
would have known the family!

LYDIA
REED, born abt 1801 in Upottery, Devon. She was the daughter of
UNKNOWN
REED and UNKNOWN
REED (nee UNKNOWN) sometime of Upottery, Devon.
No sign of her baptism in Upottery, Devon. There are a few Reed families
who are
farmers in Upottery, to the present day who may be related. In 1861
Lydia seems to be running her own Grocers buisness perhaps on the Hotwell
Road at Woodwell Crescent . Some of these buildings are still shops
today. Lydia died in 1888 probably in Bellvue Crescent, Cliftonwood,
Bristol.
John Farrant a Venn Ottery Bachelor
and Lydia Reed a Venn Ottery Spinster were married in this chuch
by Banns with consent
of--------------------------- this twenty fourth Day of March in the
year One Thousand eight hundred and twenty nine By me ? illegible Tucker?
This marriage was solemnized between us John Farrant and X the mark
of Lydia Reed in the presence of * William Farrant and Sarah Farrant
-------------
William is I believe a brother of John Farrant,
not sure who Sarah Farrant is. Why is Lydia a Venn Ottery spinster?
UPOTTERY,
or Up-Ottery, is a pleasant village, in the picturesque valley of
the river Otter, a few miles from its source, and 5 miles N.E. by
N. of Honiton. Its parish contains 91)1 souls, and 6830a. 3r. 23p.
of laud, including Rawrulge tithing, and many scattered farms, and
extending to the borders of Somersetshire.. Here is a cattle fair
on October 17th, and an annual ploughing match. Viscount Sidmouth
is lord of the manor and owner of a great part of the parish, and
resides at the large new Manor House, which has been lately erected
at a great expense. This mansion is a noble pile in the Elizabethan
style, standing on the brow of a gentle slope near the village,
and with its clusters of ornamental chimneys, forming a conspicuous
object of considerable beauty for some distance. The walls are of
pale grey flint, with quoins and dressings of Membury stone. The
interior has several elegant apartments, and in the library is a
fine collection of books, and a life-sue portrait of the first Lord
Sidmouth, in his robes as Speaker of the House of Commons. (See
page 247.) Here are also many other fine pictures, and an admirable
bust of the same illustrious statesman, by the celebrated Roubiliac.
The stables, which form one side of the village street, are in the
same style as the house, and the grounds are tastefully laid out
and planted. The manor was given by the Conqueror to Ralph de Pomeroy,
and was afterwards given to the church of Rouen, from which it passed
to Sir Nicholas Chcyney, iu the reign of Henry HI. It afterwards
passed to the Willoughby, Blount, and Popham families, and was purchased
of the latter by Dr. Addington, father of the late Viscount Sidmouth.
The Church (St. Mary,) is a fine antique structure, with a tower
and five bells. The east window is of beautiful stained glass, representing
our Saviour, the Virgin Mary, and St. John. The Dean and Chapter
of Exeter are patrons of the vicarage, valued in K.B. at £15.
5s. 7£d. and in 1881 at £892. The Rev. George Lowe,
M.A., is the vicar, and in 1813-'4, erected a now Vicarage House,
in the Elizabethan stvle, at the cost of about .£1000. The
glebe is about 10 acres, and tlie tithes were commuted in 1841,
the vicarial for £431, and the rectorial for £3r>0.
10s. per annum. Tho parish is chiefly in pasturage, and forms a
pleasing landscape from cither side of the valley. The Independents
aud Baptist* have chapels here, and the former congregation was
Preshyterian in 1715V The Parish School was built by subscription
on land given by thelate Viscount Sidmouth. The poor parishioners
have 15a. of land and a barn, left by Anne Palmer, in 1714, and
now let for £\'i a year. The rent is distributed at Easter,
together with a yearly rent charge of 40s., left by Henry Preston,
in 1623, out of Greenhays farm. In 1748, Robert Newbery left a yearly
rent of 50s. out of Sis Acres close, to the Baptist minister.
