Home

JACOB LUKE great, great, great grandfather baptised October 21st, 1792 in Phillack, Cornwall; buried July 8th, 1849 in Phillack, Cornwall.
He was the son of JACOB LUKE and JANE LUKE (nee COCK). He married firstly JOANNA WHEARE August 20th, 1814
at Phillack, Cornwall. Jacob married secondly Susanna Care July 16th 1836 at Phillack, Cornwall. Susann/a Luke (nee Care) was buried 6th August 1849 aged 45 at Phillack, the day after their daughter Jane Luke (half sister of my gt gt grandfather Jacob Luke bapt 1825)
who was aged 5 years when she was buried on 5th August 1849 at Phillack Two days later Jacob himself is buried aged 57.

An inspection of the Phillack burial records for 1849 will reveal a significant number of burials in the July to September period of 1849. Most of those buried in this period were residents of the villages of Ventonlege and Guilford and it was likely that many of these had succumbed to an epidemic of Cholera that ravaged these two villages at that time.

The West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser in the edition published on Friday August 10, 1849 and headlined "CHOLERA AT PHILLACK" reported "We regret to state that the cholera has appeared in this neighbourhood, and that there have been eleven deaths up to Wednesday night. The disease has been thus far chiefly confined to the little village of Ventonleague, where the houses are low and badly ventilated, with filthy cess pools contiguous to the dwellings." Source

The children of Joanna Luke and Edward kneebone were

(1) Elizabeth Kneebone bap 5 Aug 1849 Phillack, Cornwall Not much is known of Elizabeth, as she does not appear on the 1851 census it is thought she died before this time. (This could be why Elizabeth was baptized)

(2) Edward Kneebone born 15 July 1852 Ventonleague Phillack, Cornwall

(3) John Luke born 12 Jan 1855 Ventonleague Phillack, Cornwall

(4) Henry Kneebone born 1857 Phillack, Cornwall Henry lived all his life in Hayle, and died in 1878 aged 21Jacob Luke born 1860 Phillack, CornwallWent to South Africa with his brother John, and died in Johannesburg, his year of death is not known. It is said that he left his money to his brotherJohn, as he had not married.

(5) Jane (Jennifer) Luke born 1864 Phillack. Emigrated to Australia, and is said to have married a man who became Mayor of Adelaide, who later changed his name to Lord Luke Johnson. However although there appears to have been a Mayor of Adelaide named Frank Johnson during the period of 1908-09, records show he was unmarried. So their relationship if any remains unproved. Before she went, she was baptized at Phillack, this is probably when she took the name Jennifer.

Joanna lived to the ripe old age of 93. She died at Fortuna Villa the home of her son John in 1916.
The story told of her death is that on hearing some fireworks going off, she suffered a heart attack
believing them to be WWI bombs. Her death was registered by her son John, and reads -

Date : 20th December 1916, Joanna Luke, Spinster daughter of Jacob Luke Coal Porter.
Cause of Death : Senile Decay and Heart Failure.
