Jacob and Elizabeth Luke (nee Uren) of Bristol
JACOB LUKE my great great grandfather was baptised April 24th 1825 in Phillack, Cornwall. He died at Bristol September Quarter 1892. He was the son of JACOB LUKE and JOANNA LUKE (nee WHEARE) of Ventonleague, Hayle, Cornwall.

This is a part of a larger picture of Jacob Luke that my gt aunts (his granddaughters gave me about 1978?) he was always talked about as a handsome man by them. Jacob was a lay preacher (at Clifton Parish Church?) and spoke in a broad Cornish accent all his life.

He married December 1846 at Phillack, Cornwall to ELIZABETH UREN born abt 1826 at either Perranuthnoe, Cornwall (according to the 1851 census) or Hayle, Cornwall according to the 1871 census. (Elizabeth Luke nee Uren died abt 1897 Bristol) Daughter of FRANCIS HOCKING UREN and MARY UREN (nee WATTS) of Ventonleague, Hayle, Cornwall. Elizabeth was baptised as an adult aged 19 just before her marriage at Phillack, Cornwall to Jacob Luke. Jacob was a mariner and at one point sold dairy produce around the Cliftonwood area (according to his granddaughters) At one time he had Coffee rooms at St Georges Road near Brandon Hill, Bristol. Jacob died in Bristol abt 1892. Jacob's mother Joanna Luke (nee Wheare) died in 1832 at Ventonleague, Cornwall when he was aged abt 7 years. Jacob's father remarried in 1836 to Susanna Care.

Tragically Jacob's father, stepmother and half sister Jane Luke all died and were buried within days of each other in 1849. Jane Luke, Jacob's half sister (a child) was buried on the 5th August, Jacob's stepmother Susanna Luke (nee Care) on the 6th August 1849 and Jacob's father, Jacob Luke senr was buried on 8th August 1849. I assume the cause was cholera.

Why was Elizabeth born in Perranuthnoe? what were her parents doing there?

Jacob's uncle Samuel Luke born 1816 - 1903 son of
Jacob and Jane Luke (nee Cock). Jacob's uncle outlived him by several years.
I wonder if any contact was kept between the Lukes in Cornwall and the Luke
in Bristol? Did they ever go back and visit?

are Ernest and Annie Luke related ?
In Bristol Street Directory for 1891 "Jacob Luke "

Jacob had been ill and great grandmother Matilda Taylor (nee Luke) postponed
her wedding to Robert George Taylor to nurse him. This was told me by the aunts
her daughters.

ELIZABETH

| UREN Elizabeth D of Francis and Mary 19-Oct 1846 of Guildford Miner A grown person aged 19 |

Elizabeth died in Bristol abt 1895. Elizabeth and her future husband were brought up doors away from each other in Ventonleague, Hayle, Cornwall and would have known each other all their lives. As well as being distant cousins probably in many different ways as they both have exclusively local ancestry for generations.
According
to the aunts (grandfather Sidney Taylor's sisters) Elizabeth Luke (nee Uren)
their grandmother was similar in character to their other grandmother Elizabeth
Taylor (nee Farrant) who was well known for her dish cloth flickings at her
husband Joseph Taylor when she was irritated with him. Elizabeth Luke (nee Uren)
died bef 1901 in Bristol.

It seems that Jacob and
Elizabeth were distant cousins. Probably hundreds of times over as they both
have up to date
exclusively Cornish ancestry. No idea if they would have been aware of their
cousin realtionship. I would also like more
verification of the accuracy of these descents from John and Elizabeth White
of Gwithian, Cornwall.

In 1841
the Urens are living one household away from Jacob Luke (Elizabeth's future
husband) and next door to Jacob's aunt and uncle Enock and Mary Mitchell (nee
Luke) and Jacob's Mitchell cousins. I wonder who is Mary Kneebone? living with
the Urens is she closely related to the Edward Kneebone with whom Jacob Luke's
sister Joanna co-habited and had her family by? No idea where Francis Uren -
Elizabeth's father is either as he is alive until at least 1846 - but dead by
1851. No sign of him in 1841 or 1851 Census.
At
the parish church of Phillack, Cornwall on December 5th 1846 Jacob Luke
aged 22 a bachelor and Mariner son of Jacob Luke - labourer - resident
at Copperhouse, Phillack - married Elizabeth Uren aged 20 - a spinster
of Copperhouse, Phillack - daughter of Francis Uren, Miner - married
by banns by J M Allen - Curate in the presence of William Harvey
and William Harris (both probably first cousins of Jacob Luke)
Children of JACOB LUKE and ELIZABETH LUKE (nee UREN) are:

Mary
Elizabeth Luke, born 1858. I think the elderly woman
in this picture might be "Aunt Elizabeth" of Clevedon - although this
may be incorrect. This picture was I think one that had belonged to cousin Elsie
Coggins (nee Luke) it is possible that actually the picture may be of
a Thorne or Coggins family.
There is a Mary Elizabeth
Luke aged 29 in 1881 born Hayle, Cornwall working as a Domestic Servant
at Claremont, Chapel Hill, Clevedon. This might be her although the ages aren't
quite right The same
person is a servant aged 18 at Queen Square, Bristol in the 1871 Census. The
head of household
seems to be a Mr Rowe from Cornwall. Other than that no idea what happened to
Mary Elizabeth Luke.
The aunts never talked about her. Did she in fact die young?

married ROBERT
GEORGE TAYLOR April
25th 1889 in Clifton Parish Church. My great grandparents. Robert
and Matilda were buried at Greenbank Cemetery, Bristol. The stone has since
been removed. It seems possible that
Robert and Matilda were distant cousins as they both appear to descend from
John Vyvian MP for Helston, Cornwall.
The tree below needs a lot more research done on it before it can be taken as
factual. Particularly the Vyvyan family.
Also the connection via Jane Hern/Horn needs much more documentation before
I think it can be seen as correct.
