The Death
of Mr T. E. Hockin. An Old Cambridge Rowing Blue ..The
Times - Tuesday 23rd October 1923 . The recent death of Mr Thomas Edmund Hockin J.P. of Bardsea, Lancashire and Hayle, Cornwall, age 69, removes one of the most notable of the old Cambridge rowing blues and a fine example of a country gentleman and all round sportsman. The son of Canon Hockin, Rector of Hayle (Phillack Church), Cornwall and formerly curate of Bardsea, he was born on Sep 2nd 1854, and was sent to Radley then as now a good rowing school. There he won the senior sculls in 1873, when sliding seats were used in the University boat race of that year for the first time, was Captain of the school eight and rowed at Henley. Going
up to Jesus College, Cambridge where he helped to put his college head
of the river he profited from the instruction of Mr James B Close, whose
death was recorded not long ago. Hockin rowed in the Cambridge boat in
the four years 1876-1879. He was No.7 in the first three years. In 1876
Cambridge won easily, 1877 was the year of the famous dead heat and in
1878 Cambridge were severely beaten, in 1879 when Hockin went to No.5
Cambridge won comfortably. At Henley Hockin Helped to win the Grand, the stewards, the ladies and the visitors. He also won the pairs at Cambridge in 1876 with G. Gurdon and in 1879 with J.A. Watson Taylor and was secretary of the University Boat Club. He was an excellent coach, his instruction being enforced by an irresistible humour, geniality and unflinching candour. In the schools he bore off no laurels but by sheer determination he succeeded in getting a degree in 1882. After he went down he took to rugby football in West Cornwall, and also at Ulverston and Barrow, and proved remarkably successful at place kicking. He was a large landowner in Lancashire, south Cumberland and Cornwall and was fond of hunting, shooting and fishing, being also a staunch churchman and conservative. Mr Hockin was unmarried, he leaves a sister the wife of the Rev. W.H.D La Touche. |
