Frederic and Harriet Halls (nee Shergold) of Bristol
FREDERIC
HALLS my great, great grandfather born 22nd December 1840 Castle St, Great
Torrington?, Devon; died abt March 1923 Bristol. He was the son of JOHN
AVERY HALLS and MARY
ANN HALLS (nee HILL) of Castle Street, Gt Torrington, Devon.
His birth certificate gives the spelling Frederic. His father at the time of
Frederic's birth was an auctioner of Great Torrington. His father John died
in 1843 and his mother married again to James Cox Dilling. His mother died in
1846 aged about 34 and is buried in the family grave at Great Torrington, Devon..
It seems that Frederic and his brothers then went to live in the household of
their uncle and aunt George and Charlotte Hearson (nee Halls) in Barnstaple.
Frederic was about 2 when his father died and 6 when his mother died. What a
start in life!

Frederic married (1) HARRIET SHERGOLD daughter of THOMAS
MERRIS SHERGOLD and ELIZA
SHERGOLD (nee
WEAR) of Bristol (originally from Salisbury, Wiltshire) on March 7th
1866 in Temple Church, Bristol.
He married
secondly at Barton Regis in October/Nov/Dec Quarter 1891 Sarah Roberts (nee?)
and had a second family. Harriet his first wife my gt, gt grandmother died in
June/July/August Quarter 1891
In 1901 the second family are living at Brixton Road, Easton. By 1911 Frederic
and his second wife have moved to 49 Owen St, Easton, Bristol. But where are
their children? They are alive according to the census. But where are they living?
Frederick
was very keen on attending church. Aunt Elsie Hancock (nee Gibbons) remembers
him as being an old man with a long white beard. I think the Halls family attended
St Phillip and St Jacob, Bristol. There was an old Bible and silver (plate?)
cigarette case in the family when I was a child which I think was connected
with him.

There are no traces in any
other census returns for Frederic Halls Hill or William Halls Hill or John Halls
Hill. I am certain this is Frederic Halls and his brothers as everything else
ties up. Particularly as their mothers maiden name was Hill. Charlotte Hearson
(nee Halls) was born at Tawstock and was their fathers sister.Joanna Hall is
Frederic's grandmother.
Frederic Halls was first cousin of British inventor Charles Edward Hearson. Charles was the son of his aunt Charlotte Hearson nee (Halls) of Barnstaple.See 1851 census above.
